Web portal Digital Skills: About us
The web portal “Digital Skills” is a realization of the project “Digital Literacies” of the University of Basel. The goal of the project is to strengthen the digital knowledge and skills of all university members.
Digitalisation has a direct impact on university education. University graduates need new skills to live, learn and work in the digital society. With the strategic initiative “Digital Literacies”, the University of Basel wants to promote the digital knowledge and skills of its students, teaching staff and administrative staff.
The phrase “digital literacy” stands for a system of capabilities and skills that go beyond the level of mere technical know-how. Being ‘digitally literate’ means having a deeper critical knowledge about technology and digital transformation, on the basis of which individuals can act autonomously and creatively in the digital world.
Due to its reflexive dimension, the project Digital Literacies also offers the opportunity to critically re-consider and, if possible, to lower traditional thresholds, for example between research and teaching, between students and researchers, or even between disciplines.
The strengthening of digital skills is a condition for further goals of the university, especially the digitalisation of university teaching and the promotion of Open Science and Open Educational Resources.
The project is being implemented as part of the program “Strengthening of Digital Skills in Teaching”, supervised by the swissuniversities organisation.
